Oshkiigmong Sugar Bush

Honoring Tradition, Cultivating Sweetness

Nestled within the heart of Curve Lake First Nation, the Oshkiigmong Sugar Bush is a place where tradition and sustainability come together in the time-honored practice of maple syrup production. Rooted in Anishinaabe teachings, our sugar bush is more than just a source of syrup—it is a living connection to our ancestors, a place of learning, and a celebration of the land’s gifts.

The Sacred Tradition of Maple Sugaring

For generations, the Anishinaabeg have harvested ziinzibaakwadwaaboo (maple sap) in the early spring, transforming it into maple syrup and sugar. This process reflects our deep respect for the natural world and the knowledge passed down by our Elders. The first harvest of the season is always offered in gratitude, acknowledging the reciprocal relationship we share with the land.

At Oshkiigmong Sugar Bush, we honor these traditions while integrating sustainable practices that ensure the health of our maple trees for generations to come.

Our Process: From Sap to Syrup

Each spring, as the days grow longer and the temperatures begin to rise, we tap our sugar maples and collect the flowing sap. Using both traditional and modern techniques, the sap is carefully boiled down, creating pure, golden maple syrup—a cherished staple in our community. Visitors can witness this process firsthand, learning about the cultural significance of maple sugaring and the care that goes into each batch.

Education & Community Engagement

Oshkiigmong Sugar Bush serves as a gathering place for learning and connection. Through hands-on workshops, guided tours, and seasonal events, we offer opportunities for community members, students, and visitors to experience the rich traditions of maple syrup production.

Our partnerships with local schools and Trent University allow students to engage in experiential learning, deepening their understanding of Indigenous land stewardship, sustainability, and traditional food systems.
