Rooted in Tradition, Growing for the Future
Oshkiigmong Gitigan, meaning “New Village Garden,” is more than just a farm—it is a thriving hub of sustainability, education, and cultural connection at the heart of Curve Lake First Nation. Guided by traditional Anishinaabe knowledge, we cultivate a diverse range of crops, medicinal plants, and orchards, ensuring a sustainable future while honoring the wisdom of our ancestors.
A Bountiful Harvest
Throughout the seasons, our community farm flourishes with fresh produce and traditional medicines, grown with care and respect for the land. Our harvest includes:
🌿 Vegetables – Squash, lettuce, cucumbers, and more
🌾 Traditional Medicines – Sage, tobacco, sweetgrass
🍎 Orchard Fruits – Apples, pears, plums, and cherries
Each plant nurtured at Oshkiigmong Gitigan carries the spirit of sustainability and self-sufficiency, providing nourishment for our community and supporting local food security initiatives.
Education & Cultural Teachings
At the heart of our farm is a commitment to education and cultural preservation. Through hands-on workshops, seasonal events, and interactive programs, we teach the importance of traditional medicines, Indigenous agriculture, and environmental stewardship.
One of our newest initiatives, the sorghum maze, offers an engaging way to learn about Anishinaabe agricultural practices while enjoying a fun, family-friendly experience.
Our partnership with Trent University allows students and faculty to participate in farm activities, strengthening the connection between academia and Indigenous land-based learning
Community Markets & Fresh Local Food
Oshkiigmong Gitigan is proud to offer fresh, locally grown food to the community through our seasonal markets:
🛒 Thursday Community Market – A weekly event featuring fresh produce, traditional medicines, and handmade goods
By supporting our markets, you contribute to a sustainable local food system and help preserve Anishinaabe farming traditions.
